this is not a super eloquent review, but writing it finally got MY ANNOYANCE WITH THIS GODDAMN BOOK off my chest, so pff /waves arms vaguely
even though I forgot to mention the female characters seemed to be constantly seeing sexist plots to put them down, and this was supposed to be endearing to the reader or something idek
like it's been a while so I forget the exact details, and I can't be bothered to look it up, but for instance there was something like pendergast's wife being advised to stay behind when he went to shoot a man-eating lion, and she was all IS IT BECAUSE I'M A WOMAN UGH SEXIST BASTARD, while the real reason was something like her not having a hunting license or something ordinary like that. and this keeps happening with female characters and idk what the authors are even trying to do with this. it's like every time a character points out sexism it's a woman freaking out for no reason and imagining it, which is stupid enough. but this also seems to be presented as admirable, like the authors' idea of a strong likable female character is one who yells sexism every time things don't go her way. what the hell is going on in this book.
